We’ve all heard the horror stories. A bright-eyed intern hopefully joins the staff of a large and booming business only to be tortured and tormented by their superiors. Well, are the rumors true? Is an interns main job to make copies, get coffee, and stay out of the way? We break down these internships myths with a little game of True or False.
1. Are interns supposed to be seen and not heard?
So Fasle. At Occasions by M&K, interns are valued members of the staff whose ideas and thoughts actually matter. Often, interns spearhead projects and are given creative control over the design of centerpieces and social media.
2. But all interns get coffee, right?
So False. Actually, I have yet to make a cup of coffee for another employee. Making coffee stays as an internship myth.
3. So you run errands?
So True. Often, we interns are given lists of office supplies, as well as materials to make DIY’s for weddings. Check out the DIY projects we created and displayed in the office: http://occasions-by-mk.localdiy-july-patriotic-wreath/
4. Do interns just sit around all day waiting for a task to be given?
So False. Here is a day-in-the-life on an Occasions by M&K Intern
10:00 a.m. We arrive to the office and are given a first task. Often, this include taking inventory, helping out with a project, or pulling decorations for an upcoming event.
10:30 a.m.We finish the first task and ask what to do next. Our boss, Michelle, tells us to stop being so time efficient.
11:00 a.m. Michelle has another task for us and we organize the outdoor sheds which store other wedding and event decorations.
12:00 p.m. We begin to work on the Event Planner’s Blog. This often includes looking on Pinterest for inspiration and pictures and bouncing ideas off of each other.
1:00 p.m. We put finishing touches on our latest blog posts and pack up for the day. Actually, being an intern is pretty awesome.
